Julia Ward Howe best known as the writer of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" first issued her Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870. This was a call for women to join in support of disarmament. She failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of a Mother's Day for Peace. The current holiday was created by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, West Virginia in 1908. From there the custom spread to 45 other states and finally the holiday was declared officially by states in 1912. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first National Mother's Day. The United States celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. So, there you have it, a little background as to how this wonderful and awesome day came about. Enjoy and let's make it a great day.
