RED VELVET
If you have ever watched the 1989 movie, Steel Magnolias, red velvet caked soared to popularity. I just love Red Velvet cake! Red Velvet cake gets it color from cocoa powder, buttermilk and beets or red food coloring. It's now the number one flavor at bakeries nationwide.
If you're one to expand your taste buds by trying other products with the red velvet flavor, here are a few choices:
Red Velvet Cocoa flavored tea from Republic of Tea.
Red Velvet Whoopie Pie Mix from Williams Sonoma.
Red Velvet ultra indulgent ice cream from Ben and Jerry.
If you're like me, I love cupcakes. Here is a recipe courtesy of Woman's World magazine for Red Velvet cupcakes.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 12 muffin cups with cupcake liners. In bowl, combine 3/4 cup flour, 3 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder, 3/4 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. baking soda and 1/4 tsp. salt. On medium speed, beat 9 Tbs. unsalted butter, softened and 1/2 cup sugar until fluffy, 2 minutes. Add 2 eggs and 1 tsp. vanilla extract; beat until blended. On low speed, gradually beat in flour mixture, one third at a time, alternating with 1/3 cup buttermilk, until blended. Stir in 2 tsp. red food coloring. Divide among liners and bake 20 minutes. Cool in pan, then transfer to rack; frost as desired.
